I picked up a 50 HP Evinrude the other day, it's missing what I think was power tilt and trim, or at least part of it.
There's no tag on the transom mount, and the frost plug is blank.
It's a VRO motor, there are tags on the pump inlet stating that it's alcohol resistant and the entire motor is painted dark blue with about a 3 inch band of white pinstripes with "Evinrude" with in that area on each side. I was told it was a 1996, but my guess is more like a few years earlier. Going by process of elimination looking up each year at BRP, I am assuming that it's at least a 1990. (I have or have had 1985 thru 1989 models, and this paint scheme is different than any of those years).

The entire transom bracket consists of the hinge/tube that holds the steering cable, and a left and right side bracket. If I remove the end nut on the steering tube, I can remove each side bracket. There is what looks like a partial piston which looks like the ram piston in the 1990 or later parts diagram. There is nothing to latch the motor manually down, it rests with the cross pin or trim adjustment bar touching the back of the motor or steering pivot on the motor. When put in reverse, it jumps up with any throttle, so there's nothing holding it down.

My best guess is that this had power trim, (the controls have the T&T switch, there are two relays but the wires are cut both at the controls and the relays. The motor has 135 psi compression on each cylinder, runs like new and has a brand new stainless prop. I drove the boat it was on to the ramp myself after about a 20 minute ride to the marina. The boat was junk, but the motor runs great.

Might anyone have any picks of what I may be missing on this? Can I convert this to manual tilt properly or do I need a completely different transom mount?
My 1988 50HP with power tilt has a single external, (outside of the transom bracket), tilt cylinder, this whole bracket on this one is different, even the mid section and pivot pin look different.

It appears to me that when they removed the T&T unit, they left the piston there since they couldn't figure out how to remove it, but did remove what ever lower stop or catch it had. There are empty holes through the bracket both at the top and at the bottom, I assume they are where the T&T mounts?

Trim motor probably died and they didnt want to replace it. As far as the year, post some pics and there are many eyes on here that will be able to narrow it down for you, without the numbers. If you d like to replace the trim motor, search places like ebay, craigslist, and if not on there, check out www.maxrules.com Good luck

Re: Unknown year - 50HP

I'll get some pics this week. I've pretty much figured that it's later than 1990 by process of elimination since it appears to have had a t&t that mounted solely within the bracket. The early models seem to use one that bolts on the outside like an add on.

My main question is whether or not I can use the existing brackets without power tilt? The problem seems to be that there is no motor latch to keep the motor from flipping up in reverse. There's a tilt lever, but it only locks the motor in the up position.
I've seen several tilt units on eBay but they've all been way too expensive. It would be cheaper to part this motor out and find a full manual tilt that needs a power head first. The last one I saw went for over $250. I only gave $200 for this whole boat, motor and trailer. I scrapped the boat, not worth my time, but the trailer was a near new full roller set up. I don't suppose this has had much use buy the looks of it. My guess is that they didn't have a tilt/trim controller, and couldn't figure out how to tilt the motor, so they mauled the tilt unit to get it out. They tried to cut the piston off, but didnt' succeed, so they smashed the lower part off of the unit and left only the piston in place. There was a board with a 3/4" socket on it attached to the transom under the motor, my guess is that they put that there so the tilt piston shaft would rest in it holding the motor at a proper trim. The boat was a total mess, I really only got it for the trailer, I should have taken pics, it had some really classic repairs done with both tin roofing, plywood and tar. They apparently swapped this motor in to replace an older one, there was an second set of twin lever controls still mounted with the cables cut off flush just above the newer ones. The bolts were rusted and wouldn't move, so they just left them and remounted another set. The trailer was in good shape, so anything I get out of this beyond that is a bonus. I didn't even bring the boat home, it met it's demise right where it sat.
