Boats generally did not come as a boat, motor, trailer unit back then. One would buy a boat, choose the motor he liked and the trailer.

They already had a 1959 Red Fish Shark that they were crazy about. However, Mike and Nancy Balfe were victims of the ?casual search syndrome.? They often found themselves spotting an old boat by the side of the road and instinctively coming back around for a closer look. They weren?t really looking, but they certainly didn?t want to pass anything up.
?We were driving along when I heard [Nancy say], ?wait a minute, look at that!?,? says Mike. ?That?s all that it took.?
A 1961 McCulloch Flying Scott runabout had captured their attention. As they studied the boat, Mike noticed that the trailer was also a Scott. This boat was completely different from their Red Fish. The Flying Scott was longer, deeper, wider and provided much more in the level of comforts. It was unlike anything else that they had seen.
The Flying Scott was the result of a grand marketing scheme that caught other outboard manufacturers completely off guard. In 1961, the Marine Products Division of Scott McCulloch introduced a boat, motor and trailer combination that was designed specifically for their 75-hp Flying Scott outboard motor, and included just about every accessory item that an experienced boater could want, and it all came as standard equipment. Soon it was hitched to the back of Mike and Nancy?s truck and on its way home.
