unkown module wired to the rectifier

I have a unknown module connected to the rectifier. It is just a two wire box. One red and the other white. I can not fins this anywhere on the wiring diagrams i have. It looks like it was added in one is wired to the red wire and the other is attatched to the yellow wire. any ideas

Sounds like a cobble job. The original regulator/rectifier was huge, probably terribly expensive, and maybe no longer available. Somebody must've put on a simple bridge rectifier and an aftermarket regulator available in snowmobile aftermarket parts catalogs.

the motor is not that old i don't think. It is a 88 mariner 135 v6

That rectifier is unregulated and outputs can exceed 17v. The unknown box is prolly an add on regulator - bet on it.

so this is rigged and i should get the factory rectifier?

No.... the older type factory rectifier (like you have) is unregulated. The "rig" is a fix for that.

Or you can spend a lot of dough for a factory rectifier/regulator combo from a later year V6 Merc.

My XR4 had a 16 amp stator, a bridge rectifier, and a 2 wire shunt regulator.

It's a mickey mouse way of doing it, but it was stock murkery all the way.
