So last Saturday I used that 9.5 Rude to do some trolling, and it did okay, but seemed like it was not right. The last few days I have been dinking with it, cleaning points, adjusting this and that, and it always ran great in the can. Its when I finally put the shroud on while it was running in the can that the trouble started. It was acting like it was suffocating with the shroud on, the idle would drop, and it would not rev very well, but take the shroud off and it ran fine, so I figured exhaust leak.

I found out that these low profile motors are a pain to get apart, but I got it down to the point where I could check the base gasket. It seemed fine, but I replaced it, and checked any other exhaust-oriented gasket while I was at it. Because I was concerned about air flow, I left that rubber flange thing off that goes around the leg and seals against the housing halves, thinking I would get more air to the carb. Got it back together, same deal. At this point, all I wanted was for the thing to run right, so I ended up cutting a hole in the shroud above the carb, affixing a tube to the carb that leads to the hoel in the shroud, and installing a clamshell vent to keed rain water out. It works, the motor runs fine now, but what on earth could have caused this. There was never any exhaust in the shroud when I would check. It would just want to die when I would put the shroud on, and run great when the shroud came off. Any insight would be appreciated...

So I used that brilliant thing called the "search" button, and I really wish i would have done that last night. Apparantly that rubber donut I left off is always the culprit on the low profile motors. The fact that I left it off only exagerated the problem. What I should have done was leave it on, and seal it to the shell halves with some sealant.

Now I have a motor with a hood scoop on it and a lack of happiness about it. I can always go through the hell of taking the thing apart again and putting the rubber donut back on, but I am thinking I'll maybe do that in the fall, after I am done using the boat for the year. It is working now, but I am still miffed that I didn't think to search the subject first. Lesson learned...

Jason,

You did manage to make me laugh, at your expense-sorry.

A "Punkinhead" with ram air! That is funny. :D

Jason I feel your pain. I have the same issue with my 9.5. I went to change the shift rod seal up in the mid section...(after using the search feature ;) )... and after getting it out, looks like part is no longer available. On to plan "B".

Running those low profile engines' in a barrel also aggrivates the problem. Blowing a fan across the barrel will help. You don't have the clean air movement like you do when running on a boat. This is true of many small engines'.

Yeah, the barrel doesn't help much, it did run better on the lake. I'm obsessed with fixing the stupid thing now, so don't be surprised if I pull it off of the boat and tear it down again and reinstall/seal that boot back on and repair the hole I brainlessly cut in the hood...
