I have a 1999 Evinrude/Suzuki, 50 HP, 4 Stroke, EFI that is having unusual starting problems.
When I start out for the day everything seems to be working perfectly. I did not squeeze the bulb before I started the engine and the engine fired right up and idled smoothly and ran real strong until I stopped.
After I run the engine several hours and stop the engine it will not start back up. It appears that the primer bulb is softer but if I squeeze it gas is forced out the connector at the engine. On occassion I have primed the engine after it sat awhile and it started OK.
I also got a "Check Engine Warning" with the key in the AUX position before turning the engine over. Isn't this normal? Also, several times previously I had received a "Check Engine Alarm" after running WOT then rapidly slowing to idle. After a few seconds the alarm went off and everything appeared fine
-The tank, hoses, water/fuel filter are all new.
-The fuel is fresh and from a high turnover station.
-The fuel in the see-through fuel/water filter is clear and no water is present.
-Plugs are new.
-I believe the battery is 2 - 3 years old.
-Voltmeter reads 12.8 V on terminals.
-Alternator is charging good (12+ V).
-Engine turns over VERY easily.
-The connector is old. I took it off or my plastic tank last week when I discovered the new one had a pinched O-ring and was leaking. I bought a new connector today on the chance this may be the problem but haven't made the change yet.
-I also bought line filters for inside the engine but haven't changed this yet either.
-The temperature was 70s to low 80s. If these engines are prone to vapor lock that MAY be a possibility. [At least that's how it acts]. Is it possible to get avapor lock with an EFI engine?
Where do I start trouble shooting?
