Up grade motor or not?

I have been looking at this form for several weeks now and it is great. I just purchased my first pontoon. It is a 24 foot 1988 Sylvan. It has a 1984 40 hp Evinrude on it. I have the chance to buy a nice running 75 hp mid 80's mercury. The 40 runs great and gets the boat around ok. I am wondering how much of a difference in performance would I expect with the 75. Not as much as the HP bump would indicate. If you go up to 100+, you may see a significant difference.

We had two pontoons, both 20 footers with Merc. 75's. One two stroke, one four stroke. The performance was almost identical. The fuel economy wasn't.

We now have a 24 foot with a 115. The performance is not much different than the 20's with the 75's.
