Yeah... I guess it is :) It's not as clear as the 1600 x 1200 but that takes too long to load for the folks on slower connections. If anyone would like a 1600 x 1200 full color of that let me know, I'll email it to ya'. It's a cool screen saver.
Gotta' love those digital cameras!
Happy Friday!

Yeah, nice pic. Where we live those balloonists love to fly over. Really can't say why, but they come almost every day during the season.

Once you see those hot-air bags on a close range you appreciate the actual size, they are h-u-g-e ! Before they start, they use a giant fan to blow air into the bag, to fill it somewhat. Then the burner and finally the take-off. Impressive that nature laws can be controlled that way.

Re: up, up and away!

we were sitting at home 1 summer weekend, and heard a hellova commotion. looked out to see a balloon land in the backyard of my neighbor across the street, who was out of town

kids from all over the subdv ran over behind the house, so we went over to check it out too. it turned out to be a balloon 'racer' giving a training session to a woman. the guy said he would take a volunteer if they agreed to help pack & load the balloon back into the chase vehicle when done (@ 2hrs).

i went, since everyone else yelling to ride suddenly got lockjaw when put on the spot! ;) it was incredible. but yes, those burners were loud, which is what we'd heard inside our home. once we got up & stopped the burners, it was like floating on the ocean with no one around for miles, perfectly quiet, calm & peaceful.

one unusual thing i noticed, i could hear the people on the ground speaking normally, but we had to yell for them to hear us, the way the sound traveled. well, until we really got some altitude. i think we cruised @ 1500-2000ft.

the guy got the trainee to go up/dwn to find the shifts in wind direction to move us in the desired path. and he got her to practice sitting down on a treetop perfectly still and then moving off. also, we she would drop down and bump the ground and go back up. we ended up putting down on the median of a road. it was killer! seems like that balloon fabric weighed twice as much as the basket, like maybe 400lbs?

Re: up, up and away!

That same balloon was up last week and drifted out over the ocean. At about a mile from shore he radioed on the VHF a mayday call. He was running short of fuel and couldn't find the right draft to get towards shore. One of the locals went out in his 17' to help. The balloon dropped a line from about 75' and the boat towed them back to shore where a crowd pulled it into the ramp parking lot. The owner was handing out free passes but the rescuer graciously declined.
I wonder why? :)
And yes! They are massive when inflated... way bigger than I thought they were from the ground!
Neat stuff!

They are cool.

Anyone ever been to Albuquerque for the balloon fest?

There must be thousands of them for the week long event. It's really someting to see. Almost kind of surreal.

Beautiful to watch, :) but flying in one of those things would likely scare me half ta death... You'd have ta scrape and pry me off the floor of that basket, me thinks...
