73' Johnson 65 Hp / rebuilt last Oct. / had lower unit replaced with a used unit, that wouldnt start and run more than a couple seconds.
I couldn't find ANYTHING wrong with the motor....It just wouldnt start even though everything seemed perfect.
I installed new plugs and then it wouldnt even crank so I just took it to a marine mechanic close by.
He replaced the nuetral safety switch and it fired right up and runs pretty decent, the idle needs adjusting still.
I tokk it to the lake yesterday and put it in the water and found I had a NEW and somewhat confusing problem.
I shift it into forward and the boat backs up.....
I shift into reverse and the boat pulls forward.....UGH !!
After some checking I have come to the conclusion that when the last owner replaced the lower unit he used the wrong one. Evidently they make a reverse rotation lower unit? It is essentially the same exact lower unit but has reverse cut gears inside. I am having the original lower unit (I got with the boat) rebuilt and having it re-installed.
Anybody know how to check what year a lower unit came off of?
I found out that 1973 - 1976 units were green (as is my engine and the original lower unit) but the one that the previous seller installed and is on the boat now is Orange and says "Stinger 2" on it.
Anybody know what year the Orange lower units came on???
The guy that said that B.O.A.T. stands for "break out another thousand" wasnt lyin. :'(
