ALRIGHT!! It took me 45min all together to remove, I had to move the blower hose and the bilge pump hose out of the way to give me working room, after that was done it took me 10min to get the starter off:D, It was alot easier than I thought, removed the wires and the 2 bolts and she dropped right out with the greatest of ease. I put 2 pics of the starter that was on there, Question: How can you tell by looking at it if its a auto or marine starter?? There are holes at the bottem of the starter, so was it a quick fix and they put on an auto or is it marine?? how can I identify?? If its an auto then I will not be having this one rebuilt!! I will let you know how long it takes to put the original starter back on, hoses and all, Total time start to finish, Removal an installation.
PIC.#1 starter being rebuilt, #2 Starter on the engine, #3 Starter taken off today, #4 Veiw of starter with the holes.

Well usually the marine starters have a sticker on them that reads SAE J 1171.

i view starters as throwaways now. i think the last one for my merc 140 i/o cost me 54 bucks, for a permanent magnet high torque starter. your bigger engine may need a starter that costs a bit more.

Ya the starter I took off today, pic 3 & 4, is junk!! I just got back from Wurths with the one I took off today and he says he won't even waste his time rebuilding it, I can use as an anchor:), it turn out to be a DELCO remanufactured, doesn't even have the delco engraving,But I did get the heavier starter rebuilt (pic #1) cost me $50.00, I think thats a pretty good deal, sounds reasonable:confused:, I am ready to go put it back on right now, let ya know how long it took.................................................Pat

I think that PALLADIUM starter that you had rebuilt is an automotive type, look where the spraky brushes contact the armature there is a large vent/drain, spark city in there when you hit the key.
You can probably marinize is pretty cheaply I hope, maybe the rebuilder already did with a new rubber plug ?

I installed a PALLADIUM alternator or starter for someone once, a weird brand name I thought, wonder who sells that brand.
Glad you got'er fixed up.

He says its a Delco, the bigger one, I looked at his marine starter he had in stock and looks just like the one I took off today and said it was a quick fix starter too, starter #CM6562N, I am looking at the ones that were shown to me here in the forums on the thread that was started last week and am seriously concidering one of them, Thanks for the boost...............Pat
I plugged the little hose with silicone before I put it on but don't want to start a new thread to see if it was a right or wrong thing to do.

Congrats on the fix.

It feels good when it all comes together.

You should see the bear of a starter on my crusader....You cant use a socket and you need 3 different wrenches to move the bolt one flat at a time due to the bell housing being so close to the mount.

I invented a bunch of new cuss words as the sweat burned my eyes.

Important not to crank an engine when the bilge water is touching the bottom of the fly wheel....all the water Gets in the starter and causes it to fail in the near future.

YEP, that would explain the rust, will be looking out for that in the future too, Still haven't been able to trace the bilge pump wire, thats the only thing I haven't fixed yet, so I just hot wire the pump:rolleyes:
