No power, couldnt plane, overheated and stalled. Checked flow from outdrive. OK at idle but diminished when throttled. Installed new pump assembly. Water flowing fine.

Next attempt, temp better but still no power, couldnt plane, stalled. Put in new plugs and discovered water in one cylinder and oil in the bilge. Removed head gasket, found that there was a 3/4 in. piece missing from the cylinder with the water. installed new gasket. Deduced that water entering through head gasket was making its way into the pan and raising the oil level so that it was exiting through the dipstick. Boat starts and sounds much better (now that its running on all six cylinders) but would stall over and over after about 4-5 secs at idle. Reached under the carb and arbitrarily backed off one of the mixture screwws a half turn. Started and let idle for about 1/2 hour. Took her out. A little more power, still wouldnt plane, began popping and stalling, took her back to dock under her own power. I was only a couple hundred yards away but it was the first time i didnt need a tow back.

SO...

Here is the scenario I am hoping for...

Previous owner overheats boat badly due to a failing impeller. Keeps using boat, resulting in a blown head gasket. To try to smooth out the engine (which at this point is only running on 5) he starts playing with carb mixtures. Then I buy his problems.

I am awaiting my new rochester 2 bbl tomorrow for a Sat. install. How many of you reading this think that I will finally get her up to plane this weekend?

It Sounds like you've got it down to a Fuel Delivery Issue,......

Don't forget to Check everything leading up To the Carb. Too.....

I'd be concerned with the Popping.. could also be wires or points...
