I have a 1979 merc 200hp serial #5320887. After trouble shooting my rectifier (tach not working, battery not charging ) I found that my charging coils are apperently burned out on my stator. My problem is, this would be the third stator in less than 10 hours of run time. I checked a few old posts and am afraid to learn that it may be a warped crank shaft,or a bad flywheel ( this flywheel replaced old one which had no teeth left and is not the same flywheel it is taller with vent holes) since then ive replaced 2 stators and the last time the tech found a loose magnet and epoxied it back on. So now i have a delema .... do i want to buy a stator for $175.00 ? or spend 400 bux more for a new flyweel wich i kind of suspect may be the culprit. But here is the kicker when the last tech changed the stator he mushroomed the top of the crank trying to get flywheel off,and he actualy never got the center part off ( the part over the trigger ) gave it back to me with no nut on the flywheel ( cant get a die on till flywheel comes off)and told me the only way he knew to get it off would be to heat it which would ruin the trigger, and be another part to buy .iam ready to sell this boat but i hate to just give it away but if u read my posts from way back u can see i got screwed from the gitgo ..lesson learned.iam thinkin bout goin out today and run it at the lake to see if only the charging coils are gone but i bet before i run it 30 minutes the whole stator will be gone. watts your opinion? i greatly appreciate it :) )

hello
the only words of wisdom i have is to use the correct tool and the end never mushrooms and things dont get torn up.use a dremel to dress the ends. buy the tool. if the mechanic does not have the tool then change mechanics.
good luck and keep posting

Thanx again Rodbolt for the reply, the tech wont be working on any boat of mine in the future, i just want to get this thing squred away so i can sell it in good faith. should i take it out and run till the staor is gone ? or maybe this will only burn a switch box out?

You shouldn't have to worry about a switchbox failure if you take it out...

The best advice I can give you is to make sure everything is grounded (or connected) correctly.... The stator leads, switchbox and also the trigger leads to the boxes...

If there is a lead that is not connected, you can easily mess up the electronics... Check everything first before taking it out...
If you have the paper work on the stator, check it over and make sure every lead is connected, and connected properly...

If the stator is already toast, take a deep breath and don't repeat the same process again... Evaluate the problem, use this board and do some research to see of similar issues that may help you... I personally, find it interesting/confusing that a bad flywheel will cause a failure of a stator. Anything can happen, but a flywheel is just a bunch of magnets on a wheel, can the stator fail by having a magnet missing or the wrong flywheel itself???? It could, I guess, but I've never heard of it!... Makes me think you have something else wrong....

Are you sure that the rectifier is not to blame?

Re: update... rectifier good ...stator bad

Thanks KCLOST for the reply :) I did check the rectifier and according to the clymers manual it checks out fine, but i have continuity from either wire (the 2 yellow wires from stator to the rectifier) to ground , indicating a ground fault/short in charging coils. I could only find a couple posts on burning stators that resemble my problem , but I did find one that has me worried about a possable bent crank or flywheel as he sed the tech checked tose 2 things first but was not the prob with his. As for a ground problem I havent really checked into that thoroghly but i had good enough ground to ring out between any where on motor to each yellow wire to chrging coil(disconnected from rectifier).
I still havent been out to the lake to see how how long it will run but sounds to me like it's not running on all 6 while on the hose, but if there is no harm to a switch box to worry about and after i check the ground really good i think i will go on out and run it a bit and see if it's hitting on all cylinders at least. Iam short on boat mechanic tools and testing equip ( as Iam an electrician / fisherman )but i plan to invest in a spark tester and an adaptor for my meter to read peak voltage (cant think of watt thats called off the top of my head)lol then i am going to recruit the help of a friend who is a pretty good wrench and try to get the flywheel off that the tech couldnt do ,the loser  he put a used stator on when he changed the switch box so i dont have the papers for it but i think it ran too smooth to have been wired wrong ,at least for the 2 or 3 miles i ran it . I will be installing the next one after i check out everything else and get all the good help i can from the peeps here at iboats i love this place :) Thanks again for your advice and concern I'll keep posting .
