I have an 1990 four winns with a 3.0l OMC cobra outdrive.

Quick history from this year.
Everything was working perfect the first couple of times out this year. I was showing my dad how to work the boat and he/we hit something hard with the prop. It really bent up the propsomething fierce so you can imagine how hard we hit.

Next time out I notice a little bit of water comming in behind the motor right at the bottom of the metal ring in the transom. Looked to be leafking about 1/4 gallon an hour. The leak looked similar to last year prior to replacing the bellows. I kept an eye on it for the day and only at the end of the 6 hours on the water was there enough water for the pump to pick up.

Rather than wait for it to get worse, I decided to take it in to the shop to have them look at it. We first pulled the drive off and looked at the bellows and gimble bearing which I was told looked in perfect shape. No water was getting in there.

Then we looked in the engine compartment to find what looked like mud color in the bilge. The mechanic pulled the dipstick and you could see obviouse signs of oil in the water.

Mechanic said that the seal around the transom mount was probably leaking and the water got high enough to go in the engine via the rear main and I should pay $850 to have the motor pulled, drive pulled and have rear transom mount resealed.

The mechanic drained the oil and changed the filter and ran the boat for 3 hours. Looked in oil and no water. One thing that was discovered is one impeller blade busted off and was stuck in the spring of the thermostat so the boat seldom came up to temp. Pulled that out and engine comes up to 150 and stayes perfectly.

I did have to run the boat for about 15 min at slightly above 1500 rpm to get it back to the boat launch with that bad prop causing the entire boat to shake for that ride. Is it possible the transome mounth bolts shook loose a little bit.

Also I don't see how the water got up above the rear main because I was checking it all day and there was very little accumulated water. At the end of the day I did have to put the boat in reverse and lean on the throttle a little bit. The Mechanic said I probably pulled the transom mount away from the boat and flooded it then. Shortly after this is when I kicked on the pump and it pumped water for about 15 seconds.

I'll answer any more questions the best I can. Thanks for your help guys.

Mike

You would know better then anyone if the water got that high. As for the bit of water getting in, you prob caused that by hitting the prop. Seal the transom back up and keep an eye on the oil. And get yourself a depthfinder with an alarm

I do have a depth finder read 8' for about 8 min straight then showed a spike "BANG" then 8' again. Not much you can do about that.

doesn't 850 bucks sound hight to reseal the transom mount?

Any body else?

Thanks.
Mike

i would put the boat in the water and get a real good flashlight look real hard and decide were its leaking if you do have a leak it going to need to be fixed

there is just no way that you got water in the oil that way you would need at least a foot of water in the boat and i still dont see it happening ;)

tommays

Tommays is right. I wouldnt throw away 850 bucks until I knew what was leaking. As for the oil in the water I would wait and see if it does it again. Have you run it much since you changed the oil? If the transom seal is leaking you can fix that yourself. One way to check it is to run some clear silicone arond the outside and let it dry and then see if it is still leaking. Its not the correct way to fix it though.

"there is just no way that you got water in the oil that way you would need at least a foot of water in the boat and i still dont see it happening "

I agree with you tommays,I will take it out this weekend and look until I find the culprit. How on earth could water get in there and then not show up when running it in a can. Is there some way for it to get in there on the lake and not when it is running submerged in a can?

are the bolts that hold the transom assembly on easy to get to? Do I get to them from the inside or outside? Is it possible that they were vibrated loose causing the leak?

Sorry for 101 questions guys, just trying to cover all of the bases.

When it is in the can only the lower unit is in the water. Your leak is probablyin the base of the transom

It was changed when winterized so, it was pre winter oil. The boat was kept in a heated garage all winter so I didn't think I had to change it.

Maybe somehow over the winter some water somehow got in. If you have run it 3 hours with no water showing, your looking real good. Go have some fun, keep an eye on the oil and find the leak in the transom

Re: UPDATE! slow leak, water in oil then nothing???

got down behind the motor this weekend and 5 of the six transom bolts were loose. I mean loose like the washer could spin freely behind them. I tightened them up and spent about 4 hours on the water Sunday with out taking on a drop of water!

Thanks for the advise guys. Once again this site has saved me a lot of money.

Mike
