just wanted to update on a problem i was having during the winter that still has some open questions about what went wrong. omc cobra drive, the drive was stuch and we couldn't get it off no matter how hard we tried during the wither. well after we took off the shrink wrap we got the engine ready to come out and lifted and adjusted the engine while trying to get the drive off but it still wouldn't come off. we then cut the shaft on the engine side of the u-joints (the part that actually goes into the coupler). the drive was then able to come off. i just wanted to see if anyone knew what would cause that. i looked all over for some sort of corrosion but didn't see any, it looked like no water or anything made it to that area. at first i though it might have been alignment but after trying to move the engine and it still not coming free i can't think of anything else that could cause it. well the broken shaft is still in the coupler, don't plan on removing it just going to replace both. any thoughts on what would have caused it to be so stuck?

I think you are going to find out your answer when you remove the coupler. Had you been removing the drive anually and greasing the shaft that goes into the coupler?

yes the drive does comes off every year for the winter and gets greased when put back on in the spring, in fact there was grease all over the u-joints we found when the drive actually came off. i was hoping i didn't forget to grease it but since we can see the grease im sure i didn't forget. i have had some drives that weren't removed in a few years but even they didn't give me this kind of problem.

The grease needs to be on the splines where they go into the coupler. Greasing the ujoints has nothing to do with greasing the splines that goes into the coupler. If the splines were dry and add a little water to cause rust and corrosion, you then have a reason to use a cutting torch.

did you have any kind of severe impact last year?
spline could be twisted in place
