I have a 89 OMC 4.3 V6. At the end of the season, I noticed some water in my plugs, pulled the valve covers, and also noticed the oil was white. From all the advice I read and got directly from posts, it seemed to either be the exhaust manifolds and/or the head gasket.

I took the cylinder heads off this weekend. The cylinders looked pretty good, but there was some rust and damage on the heads. The head gasket didn't look too bad, but we did find one small area that might have leaked the water.

Because of their age and damage, my buddy advised me to purchase two new cylinder heads instead of taking them to a machine shop. So, two new cylinder heads/head gaskets and two new exhaust manifold will go on this winter. Should cost me a around 1,000.

Questions:
1) My buddy told me the Autozone automotive cylinder heads would work. Is this true or do I need marine-grade cylinder heads?

2) Any other maintenance that I should perform while I have the heads off?

Thanks to Jkopec, JustMrWill, Lou C and especially Don S and Bondo for all the help in the past.

As long as they are new cylinder heads, they will work. Just be very carefull if they are rebuilt heads. If they have had any valve seats replaced, the new seats don't seem to last in marine engines.

Aren't marine head gaskets needed if running raw water salt cooled? Think I read that somewhere?
