Please see attached photo.... the lower unit that was on my outdrive does not have this oil hole on it (aftermarket I suppose), could this be the reason why my upper unit seems fine and the lower unit didn't get any lube?

Are there aftermarket units that don't utilize this oil passage or am I completely wrong?

I have a reman lower unit, just died... seised due to water..... there is a seal / grommet on the cap of the water pump / impeller that was not in correctly.

Did you change the whole outdrive, or just the lower unit. I would bet money the upper is also junk.

Don, just the lower was change, I bought it that way not knowing any better. Please advise on why the top would also be junk? There is no water in the top unit, that lube looks and smells fine.

There has to be water in the gear lube, the upper and lower share the same oil. what happens to one, happens to the other.
I can assume, you aren't using OEM gear lube. Probably synthetic and it stays seperated so it destroys things.

Don, I really don't know what is in there but I'll have assume it's synthetic since the upper seems to be fine, but when I drained the lower it was almost all water and no lube. When I removed the lower the uppers lube drained and looked fine to me.

What do you think?

Could this be a possibility..... it seems as though the original, or at least the extra lower unit I got with this boat has a port that the new one doesn't, and it seems to be an oil port that runs from the top unit to the bottom unit. Maybe this new unit is not correct? The old unit has a stud at the transom end and the new one does not. Possibly the incorrect unit and oil was never passed down as it should have been?

The new unit also has two treaded plugs (not sure if the other one does or not) for fill and drain.

Oh its a stringer. 4 places to check and change oil there.

Any how can water get in? Prop seal (check for fishing line) drain plug seals, water pump housing or seal damage. Pretty much goes for all boats.
