Updating my kicker to controls questions...."snap in cables"????

I replaced our old 61 -5.5 fisherman with a nice 1984 Evinrude 8HP long shaft and while I love the motor, hooking up controls is a lot more difficult than my old 61....I finally found the obsolete connection kit for the motor (old number 0174120) and it tells me I need "snap in cables", or type O cables. I was using an old shipmaster control and type 400 cables and now looks like that won't work without replacing the cables, and buying yet another kit to convert the shipmaster to snap in type. I wonder, would I be better off trying to find a differnt control, maybe with cables, or, just go ahead and update what I have. I could easily resale the current unit, but am confused on what control I would even look for...
