Hi Guys,

I am going to order a new VRO pump to replace the original 1984 Pump on my Evinrude 140. The pump still works but there are known issues with these first generation pumps and I've just rebuilt my engine and wanted to ensure I have a new, up to date pump installed.

What I am wondering is will the new pump send have the new and updated alarm codes even with my existing electronics setup? I am most concerned with the "low/no oil flow" alarms. I am hoping I get the full array of alarm codes that the VRO2 system has, otherwise I'm none too excited about spending $300 on this thing.

Also, if there is any "gotchas" with this installation I would appreciate any insight.

Thanks guys.

i don't have the answer to your question, but on break in of the rebuild, even with the new pump. you have to mix 50-1, plus the oil from the vro. to get the correct amount of oil needed for the break in. the vro pump does not know the engine is being broken in. that would be one of those bad Gotchas.

Re: Updating the VRO System

I am running 50:1 in the tank, and will continue to do so for the full 10 hours... plus the existing VRO is pumping well... I just want to install a new updated unit before I come off the 50:1 break-in mix. I don't trust the original 1984 1st generation pump will last as long as this fresh rebuild will.

Re: Updating the VRO System

You will probably want to get away from VRO2 as well, since they were discontinued maybe 14 years ago +/-. The newer OMS systems are better and contain all of the parts to upgrade to whatever level you want, including adding system check. If you still have the 3 wire harness on your VRO, you will probably want the [Edit] part #5004559 ss #5007423. Check this all out with a dealer so that you can get the greatest benefit.

Re: Updating the VRO System

Thanks ezeke... I was wondering if you know a good place to look up parts online? I use the BRP parts catalog but they are all old part numbers and they don't translate to the new/revised parts... I called my dealer and they were very unimpressed when I asked them for the new part number, they just wanted to sell me the pump, not to give me any information about it.

I also asked about the alarms and stuff but they basically want to do all the work for you, they aren't pleased when you just buy parts and don't pay them for the labor.

Can someone tell me the difference between #5004559 and #5007423 because my dealer sure wont.

Thanks guys.

On-line dealers will usually tell you the superseding part numbers. Some, like ishopmarine .com have a place at the top center of their home page where you enter the original part number and look up the part AND the superseding part number.

If you want personal assistance, email Bill Kelly at maxrules .com.

Please let me know once you install this. I use a 1986 pump. When my oil starts to get low I get a slight buzz then as it gets more low it buzzes every 20 seconds. For me that's perfect but I would like like to know if yours you like better.

Re: Updating the VRO System

Well my new VRO pump arrived but I still need harness 174710 because I have a no wire pump. My local dealer wants like $65 + tax for the thing... can anyone point me to a cheaper alternative location? $65 and tax for 4 wires and a piece of rubber just doesn't seem like a good deal to me.

Any help is of course appreciated.

You may want to broaden your search for a local dealer. The list price on that part is stated as $36. and change on one on-line site that I just checked and the highest price was $40.

If you check the third checkbox here and enter your zip, you will get a list. Search by area code and get a bigger list:
