I've searched this subject with no results. Maybe I'm using the wrong wording. I have a manual. I am working on an alpha one gen1. How do I properly torque the bearing retaining nut? My manual says torque to 200 ft lbs. But I am using an offset wrench, won't that multiply the torque? The distance from the center of the nut to the place my torque wrench attaches is 12", so should I torque to 100 ft lbs? I am referring to the nut that is directly behind the u-joints.

Thanks

DougV>

Erm...have you replaced the old brg's and gears. If so..there is a new procedure for putting them back together. I am not sure the clymer manual's n such will cover the correct way to do it.

The new brg's get tighted to a rolling torque spec.

AS for the the Brg Carrier nut...try to get it as tight as you can. 200ft pounds is a good pull.

TMD

No I just resealed it. I measured the rolling torque at 2-3inch pounds(If I remember right) whatever the manual said for used gears and bearings. I think new bearings were supposed to be rolling torque of 6 inch pounds. I did torque the retaining nut to 111 ft lbs with a 12 inch wrench offset (that's as near as I could tell the manual was saying to do) and came right in with the correct rolling load torque.

DougV>

OMC school had torque wrench adapter, instructor said to set wrench 90 degrees from adapter, and use spec settings. May not be true, but we did not break anything

Are you talking about the nut that holds the top drive gear to the u-joint assembly? My Seloc book calls for 85 foot lbs. I just did it with the bearing assembly out of the drive.

No, the one in question is the one that holds the drive gear, shaft, and bearing assembly, into the upper case.

DougV>
