I ordered a ranger 618 with a 140 Johnson 4 stroke 40amp alt.The boat comes with a dual bank charger and I can upgrade to a triple charger for about 80.00.Will I over charge my starting battery by charging with trolling motor batteries? Will the stock 40amp be enough?

Re: Upgrade battery charger

Some people need a three bank and others need only two batteries on their boat. I use a Pmariner three bank and I only use two batteries, so I have to parallel two outputs. The size is a more important issue. If you discharge three batteries below 50% then you may want to consider a 50 amp charger. Most of us don't need that. Uusually a 15 to 25 amp multibank charger will do. Chargers today are much better at managing charging automatically and do not over charge if you get the right one. Some of the new multiple bank chargers allocate the charging as needed so your boat battery does not get charged very much if at all. This allows all the capacity of the charger to be used where needed. There is another issue on what automatic really means. A true automatic charger needs to recycle to the soak or sulfate mode automatically. Most automatic chargers do not do this and simply stay in the trickle mode after switching once from the sulfate mode. Here is a site that may help you. WWW.pmariner.com
