I am new to this site but already love the information. We just bought a 1994 24' Tracker with a 40 horse merc. It runs good but is lacking in power when pulling a tube. I have found a 1994 90hp Force but am not familiar with these units. Are they any good and what do I need to look for on the unit. The guy tells me it has 150lbs on each cylinder. Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks

Forces haven't been made for years and parts and service for them are getting hard to come by. I personally would avoid it unless it's dirt cheap. They were also not typically as strong as equivalent horsepower models from other manufacturers.

Re: Upgrade motor to a 90hp Force

As 90 hp motors go I think the gearcase on the 94 Force is somwhat undersized and prop selection is less than that of 95 and newer. From my very limited Force experience I wouldn't even look at the Force.Check parts for the Force and major brands here at iboats.Something like 3 or 4 times as many pages of parts. Not to mention the nation wide BRP dealers supporting E/J motors and other major brand
dealers.Merc make a big foot motor especially suited for a pontoon application.
Don't forget while a 90 will give better performance it will use about 9 gph(gallons per hour) at wot(wide open throttle). If you throttle back to the 40s speed the motor will be loafing where the 40 would be pushing its guts out.And at the 40s speed the 90 will get close to the 40s gas consumption.

I am not a fan of the Force engines ... saw too many problems with them when I was working at the marina. I would not consider a Force and upgrade. Run, Forest, Run!

Re: Upgrade motor to a 90hp Force

I had a 50 Force that came with an older center console. It was a slug, so the boatyard tried to sell me a new Johnson 88. No, I wanted to save some $$$ so they mounted, against their wishes, a slightly used 90 Force they had laying around. It was nearly new, and they had me agree that there was no warranty, and that I would be better off with a new engine. They practically tried to convince me not to buy that motor. But I knew best! Boy, what a dog! I and the dealer struggled with that thing for 2 summers; no one could get that Force to start very often or run very well. They finally replaced it with a new Johnson 88. The boatyard tried to sell the Force for me, but couldn't get a nibble. About 5 years ago, the yard had a winter storage shed fire. Jed from the yard called me: "The bad news is that our big shed burned down, and we lost several wooden sailboats. The good news is that your Force 90 was in there too." Don't touch that motor with a 10 foot paddle!

When you upgrade, and you will, look for a motor that is suited to a pontoon boat. I had an older 2 stroke and went to a 4 stroke Bigfoot. I'll never look back. Quiet, great on fuel, and no smoke. The only 2 stroke I would consider is the e-tec.

I think your 90 will produce speeds around 22-24 mph your present speed is probably about 12 or 15.Speed could be lower but not likely to go higher.A 4 blade pontoon prop will help produce the best performance.
