You can get Teleflex steering right here at iboats. But I gotta say that the cable & pulleys system is a lot better for that motor. The Teleflex will work, but will have severly limited steering arc, won't tilt without interference, and just isn't "right". The cable ram travel doesn't match the attachment point on the motor.

There is nothing wrong with cable & pulley steering if it is properly set up. Race boats use it. But if not set up properly, it can be awful too. It's amazing how many brand new boats were not rigged properly.

I'd keep the cable & pulleys any day.

On that mtr, Agree x 2. Stick with the cable and pulleys. Just make sure the cable is new and all the pulleys are in good shape.

..and proper tension on the springs. Hopefully the tension springs are placed properly.

F_R explained perfectly the Teleflex setup on these old motors that were designed for cable & pulley. Cable & pulley was good up to about 100 horses in the 1960s but around 1964 you started to see the Teleflex type setups. The parts for connecting the motor with cable & pulley was offered for years but now only certified for 40 total horsepower in the 1970s (the parts also fit bigger motors but OMC was mum on that)

A schematic, but same system. How many turns around the pulley, depends on how many groves in the pulley. Just be sure that the blocks on each side aligns with entry/exit on the pulley so the wire does not 'double' when turning the wheel..

Easier to do than to explain. First we need to know what kind of steering wheel drum you have. This is the best kind, and the most difficult to wind.

Some general fine points:
1. All pulleys must be thru-bolted with stainless steel bolts and nuts. Use flat or oval head screws, with finishing washers on the outside. Make sure the cable doesn't rub on the protruding screw on the inside. Best to use self locking nuts.

2. Use swivel pulleys at each corner of the boat. Do not use swivel pulleys at the motor. Use non-swivel there. Do not use the ones that are brass-riveted to the strap.

3. The pulleys at the aft corners should be as far aft as possible, and at transom height +/- an inch. From there the rope goes thru a pulley at the motor, and back to a clamp at the transom, close to same height as the corner pulley as possible. Tie a single overhand knot where it attaches to the loop at the end, then clamp it.

4. Some people use two springs, one is enough. Put it on the starboard side.

5. The rope comes off the TOP of the wheel drum. Exception, if both ropes go down the same side of the boat, one goes on around the drum 1/2 turn and comes off the bottom.

6. Rope should be one piece, no splices or knots.

7. Use a proper OMC tiller attachment at the motor.
