Upgrade to Swing Up Center Windshield

Has anyone modified their swing up section in the center of a windshield to use gas struts or something better than the really bad slides with notches and locking knobs (vintage 1976 Taylor Made windshield)? The windshield has an overhang from the hardtop so not likely it can be changed to a left or right swing.
