Swapping all the components from a 1991 mercruiser 3.0 140 over to an older 1981 mercruiser 140. What am I missing or how do i check to see that everything is getting the voltage they should. I feel like the wiring is perfect, but i have no spark??? I want to check each component of the ignition system, but i didn't get to it yet as i was trying to make sure i had all the wiring correct before i concluded that any one variable was faulty

DOES IT MATTER THAT I HAVE THE MOTOR ON A STAND AND NOT IN THE BOAT... THE WIRE HARNESS IS NOT CONNECTED, JUST A BATTERY TO THE MOTOR???

Before i began this swap, the motor (81') had a distributor with electronic rotor, an automotive coil, a slave solenoid, circuit breaker switch, and the same starter and alt. that are still on there...

I have swapped over the wire harness, valve cover, engine coupler, flywheel housing, fuel pump, and mainly...The Est ignition system (ignition coil, distributor, shift cutout switch(on the Valve cover), slave solenoid. I am still using the starter, alternator, and circuit breaker from the old motor.

Now I'm not getting spark. Any tips?

PLEASE LOOK AT MY PREVIOUS POST FOR PICTURES AS IT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE WORKING RIGHT NOW?

Re: upgraded to EST Ign. system, now no spark?

do you have an OEM service manual for the "new" ignition system??

there are troubleshooting procedures outlined that are necessary to follow in order to properly identify the problem

you need to start by checking some voltages and make sure everything is connected properly

The ignition system gets its voltage from the keyswitch. So if you don't have a wiring harness/cannon plug hooked up you'll need to make a tempory jumper.

You can jump between sockets 5 and 6 to get power to the ignition

You can also hook a test lead do the purple wire on the choke, or the alternator to put power to the purple wire on the coil. They are all three hooked together in the wiring harness.

Thanks to Don and everybody else I finally got spark with the Est system!!!
Thank God, I was about to just switch it back just because of a dumb little jumper in the harness connector. I finally figured out which wires to jump and got spark. Come back inside excited, only to check the thread and saw that Don had posted the exact info that I was in such desperate need of...lol. to start, must jump harness #5 to #7 for ignition 12+ and touch #6 to #7 to engage starter...never the less, its got spark and compression. Just gotta get her running now. Thanks for the Diagrams Don, it helped alot. my clymer manual doesn't have all of them. Im gonna Start a thread regarding starting this motor for the first time and I have a few quesitons. thanks, Matt.

Seems to have a large amt. of oil, because some is coming out of the exhaust elbow when i crank it over. I'm positive that it is from being stored, but not sure if there's something I can do, or just try to get her running and burn/blow it out? what do ya think? The oil level on the dipstick is perfectly new oil at the full level.
