I have a 228hp 1981 305cc with a Quad'junk' 4-barrel that I bought in Georgia in December and the boat has had 5 owners before. And I am having interment ignition problems. I have eliminated fuel, good gas, rebuild the carb professional, increased fuel pickup tube in tank 3/4", replaced fuel pump, replaced water-separator/filter, replaced fuel line, placed an in line filter, etc. When I am running usually after running a while the engine won't advance the timing well that was seems to be happening and the engine sputters, backfires and just runs like crap. Then sometimes it will run fine. I thought it was the fuel since it seems to clear up after I putt around at low rpms for a while, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The shop said it was advanced 26 degrees and set it back to 8 degrees. I have replaced the plugs and wires; the points, rotor and cap have been replace by previous owner and look great. I pulled the points off and checked to see if the mechanical advance mechanism works and the springs spring back when you turn the shaft a little, they do not get held up. I do not want to go replacing everything just to replace it. I would like to know what are the best type of ignition system for the money so I can completely eliminate the problem for years to come. I would like a completely shelf contained distributor that does not need vacuum and will withstand the test of marine environment. Just wanted to see what you all have experienced.

Yup, go with what Don suggested, I put one on mine and havent had any issues. Works with current distributor and wiring up is a snap. You may need to fashion a cheap circuit to work with your ESA.

Don S Is the electronic conversion kit you recommended compatible with an OMC ESA?? Is it based on the Pertronix module?? Can you recommend and ESA compatible with the conversion kit you recommend?? I have a 1988 Chev 5.7 coupled to a Cobra drive.

Also, one other question, is the dash board tach compatible with this conversion kit?? If not, any ideas to adapt??

I used the Pertronix kit in my boat. Best and easiest thing you could do to a motor.

I put an MSD marine PRO-Billit ready to run distributer in mine and it works great. Don't have to run the Thunderbolt IV module as it has centrifical advance and will plug right up to their CDI module if I decide I need it later.
Got mine from Jegs.

Re: Upgrading /Replacing the Ignition system

Thanks guys for the vote of confidence in the conversion and based on these type of inputs I have already decided to amke the upgrade. The problem is I have an OMC with an ESA typically not compatible with the electronic upgrade (and a dash tachometer I am not sure about) and I need to get the whole system working. I have found a replacement ESA from CDI/Rapair which is compatible with points and Pertronics but I am considering the whole kit in the weblink Don S posted because it includes the wires and coil and I am running a automotive coil I want to replace anyway. The kit makes it cheaper if it is compatible with the CDI ESA. (My ESA is bad and needs to be replaced also but which one to buy??)

Not a bad deal Don found you. In the future it doesn't have to say marine on it to be the right one. I use a Super Stock coil and wires from the local auto parts store. There is no difference except for the price.

Re: Upgrading /Replacing the Ignition system

I just got off the phone with my boat mechanic and he recommends that I get the Mercury ThruderBolt Four Ignition System. Which would include the Distributor, an HEI coil, and the Brains-Module. That would cost around $500.00 for the parts. Have any of you had experience with these type of set up. It would completely eliminate the springs and weights in the distributor and become for maintenance free. Let me know what you all think.

Re: Upgrading /Replacing the Ignition system

You can do the same thing(well not excactly) by going with the pertronix kit for about $75. Tach will still work and the ESA circuit you may need to build is less than $5 at radio shack.

YOu will still have mechanical advance, but during normal tune ups as long as they are checked and kept clean they will work forever.

Jared ,I think your distributor has bad bearings, that bind, and physically turn the distributor, changing the timing.I like Don S response.I would suggest you have info on the system available incase there is a problem, and your mechanic is not familar with your new ignition.
Personally,I don't have big problems with point style ignition systems, for carbureted motors. But Don S price certainly beats the cost of new M/C distributor.Go with it

DHP
