What is a good Naugahyde vinyl weight for pontoon seating ,I don't want it hard an brittle but soft an durable with all the protections like UV ,cold crack scratch res., mildew, non fade, an use a good thread to sew it with. I have a 24df sweetwater that i need to have re upholstered & what thread so when i talk to the upholstery shop i can ask what they use ? Thanks in advance all help would be appreciated

The secret to quality vinyl is primarily the backing. Without a good backing, any stitching will not last long. When it comes to upholstery, you generally get what you pay for. You can feel the difference in quality vinyl. Your upholsterer will be the best source of information.

+1 with Silvertip. I would ask the advice of a professional. I tackled my upholstery and ordered the matching vinyl that my pre-made back to back lounges came in so I could match the coaming pads. The backing of my vinyl was a fine grid of crossing fibers which allowed me to stretch the vinyl tight when stapling. I was putting some might into the stretch and the staples were not ripping through the vinyl; soo backing is important or the vinyl will just rip off. One thing to consider is how you finish your foam. Many sites recommend using Dacron fiberfill wrap. This gives the cushion a fuller more rounded look by avoiding small wrinkles. Also avoid using adhesive to stick your vinyl to the foam you want it to be free flowing. Just my .02 and by no means am I an expert

When it was time to re-upholster my seats, I got marine vinyl from JoAnn Fabrics. That was in 2008 and all the material is holding up really well. It has good backing like Silvertip says so there is truth to that. But what I think keeps the vinyl in good condition is covering the seats after every use. Weather you use one cover for the entire seating section or individual covers for each seat is a matter of preference....I use individual covers which allows the floor to dry in a day and the color is still as vibrant as ever as I spray fabric protectant on each seat at the start of the season. I bought and sewed canvas to use as covers and attached stainless snaps to attach to the railings and bottom of seats...that has worked very well for us.
