Upper Crank Seal

My 1990 Johnson 8.0 (J8RESR) seems to be leaking fuel from somewhere underneath the flywheel. I have a little oil residue dribbling down the port side of the motor. It's not much but enough that it's something I'd like to fix in the off season.

The service manual suggests the problem might be an upper crank seal and that I can get to it by removing the flywheel. But it also says I need a special tool.

Anybody have any experience with that repair? Any other suggestions on where my leak might be coming from? It's not the carb, fuel pump or fuel lines.

bump...

Any thoughts on how easy or hard it might be to replace my upper crank seal?

If you took the flywheel off and exposed the upper seal location your local dealer probably has the special tool that they would pull the seal out for whatever their minimum charge is...probably 30 minutes labor. You could work out a diy option...such as the video link below or drill a very small hole in the metal case (1/16)...don't drill deep...just through the thin metal case of the seal...and then insert a metal pick/awl and work the hole bigger run in a metal/wood screw a few threads and use a block of wood (to protect the motor) to pry it out with a hammer or other tool. There is definitely some danger with the drill method as you don't want metal shavings to get down into the bearings or to have your drill bit do collateral damage.

I think it's probably best to remove the flywheel and make it easy access for your local dealer to use their tool and pull the seal for you.
