Upper driven gear bearings...

Guys,

Can somebody come up with the part numbers for the upper driven gear bearings I need?

The small one seats in the top-cap and the large one seats in the housing. The gear ratio stamped on the sticker is 1.50 and the serial number on the housing is OB590959.

I'm getting thoroughly confused on which bearings are correct for my application!

Help!

It would be a whole lot cheaper if you just got the part number and manufacturer off the bearing and the race and go to your local bearing suppler to get replacements. Trust me, Merc doesn't manufacture bearings. they use Timken, SKF, etc. Just look at your bearings.
You do know you will have to reset your rolling torque and then gear heights after replacing the bearings aren't you. It does require special tools. Here is a link to download the OEM manual. http://www.4shared.com/document/zz_5pj9o/Service_Manual_06.html
Section 3A covers all the details.

Don,

Yeah, I'm WELL aware of the delicate torquing and shimming process thanks to tons of reading, and consequently I've decided I'm NOT doing it! At $68\Hour I figure I could either buy the tools and screw it up or pay someone the cost of the tools (or maybe a bit less) and get it done right! :-]

Regarding the bearings, my thoughts were identical to your own - separate the bearings, take 'em to a local bearing shop and cross reference them. Well guess what, the small Timken bearing has the following # stamped into it: 09067 You shoulda seen the look on the dude's face, there's no cross reference...

At any rate, I haven't had an opportunity to separate the larger bearing yet, but based on my most up to date research these are the two Merc/Timken parts I need to obtain:

Small Bearing: Merc # 31-61100A1 (No Timken Cross-Reference)
Large Bearing: Merc # 31-32573A1 (Timken Cone #24780/Cup #24720 used with 1.50 ratio and 1.50 Heavy Duty)

If nothing else, I hope this thread lives on to benefit somebody else down the channel...
