I'm replacing water impeller on 1972 Evinrude 6 hp. In process, upper driveshaft pin literally fell apart. Can I make makeshift pin? Length? If not, where can I secure one? Also, it is necessary to replace the grommet on water pump housing too? This is my first impeller job, so any help will be much appreciated. Also should lower pin (which impeller sits on) fit tight on shaft? It easily fell out when removing impeller.

That pin is a stainless steel roll pin. If you can find one locally, more power to you. Otherwise, it is part number 303261 from any Evinrude dealer. Just as important is the integrity of the rest of the seal assembly, including the 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring. If these parts leak, it will slowly destroy the powerhead over a period of time.

If the pump grommet is not hardened or cracked/chewed up, you can use it.

The impeller drive pin is a loose fit.

I found the correct sized (3/32 X 3/4) roll pin at hardware store and ordered an impeller. When I reassemble the whole thing, which areas will need gasket sealant? I have the 6202D model. I understand that I need to put sealant under metal impeller plate, but what other areas need sealer? Pump housing edges? Bolts? My housing is metal to metal with no gasket. What about lower unit mating surface and their bolts? I have read different things on this issue and I want to do it right so I would appreciate some advice. From what I can see, it looks like sealant was only used under plate and possibly on bolts. My current understanding is that I should use sealant under plate and on pump housing mating surface and bolts. No sealer on lower unit mating surface and its bolts. Correct? I have Permatex 2. Is this okay? Thanks.

I use some light grease on the pump screws to prevent corrosion. Yes, sealant under the plate only. P-tex 2 is fine...

Replaced impeller. Still not issue. Although one vine was broken off of old one. Removed thermostat. Still no water. Next thing to check? I don't believe it is the lower grommet as I had no water when I went to store it last fall (before removing lower unit). Just how flexible should lower grommet be? It is somewhat stiff, but no cracks or other damage. Upper grommet? Intake screen?

For those of you hanging on the edge of your seats for resolution of problem. I figured it out. The copper tube was not seated in the lower grommet. I have yet to figure out why some posts get more attention than others on here, but it all worked out. Thanks to those who contributed. Just happy it was not a piece of rubber lodged somewhere or upper grommet problem.
