I have just removed the upper end cap from my 1979 40hp 2stroke merc. I have a used upper end cap that I am replacing it with but I also want to swap the bearings out and put the bearings that were in the old end cap in the new used end cap. How do I pull this particular bearing out correctly? Has anyone had any experience with this particular upper end cap and bearing.
Thanks
Kelly

Re: Upper end cap bearings

We remove them by applying heat to the cap with a torch, once heated they usually fall out, if they are stuck we have a vice opened to a slightly larger size then the brg and tap the cap on it to dislodge the bearing.

What if I don't have any real way to heat it up- I have been messing with them for a few hours and am starting to get a little frustrated. Just want to get this project done
Thanks

Re: Upper end cap bearings

When ever you push or hammer on the center race of a bearing you stand a good chance of ruining the bearing but if you don't have the proper tools available to you maybe you could pry the seal out of the top and use as much care as possible to press or drive the bearing out?

Re: Upper end cap bearings

I have gotten the seal off both end caps no problem and was considering pressing or driving the bearing out. Do you not recomend taping if I can find something the same in diameter to push or drive the bearing out- oh, the bearings do fall out the bottom side, correct? If I find a way to get a torch, how ling does it normally take to heat the cap up to where it will fall out.
Thanks again!

Re: Upper end cap bearings

I make myself laugh- Well, I reverted to a kitchen stove and pot. Set the end cap in the pan and gradually turned up the heat until, WHALAH!!! The bearing slipped right on out. Just gotta be a little inovative:D
