upper end on outdrive shot.. what to do?

mercruiser pre alpha outdrive 2.0 gear ratio with a 3.0 mercruiser 140hp


upper end is toast but my question is on gear ratios. my buddy gave me a upper end he had and it was in good condition so i slapped in on now after reading some more i found out this ring and pinion has a 1.5 gear ratio (it was out of a v8 boat) now i haven't torqued down anything or filled up with oil. Is it worth it to even try or is it gonna be geared so tall it won't pull a skier or tuber. what about RPMs. i'm thinkin i should sell this one and pick up on on ebay with the proper gear ratio

should i double check the ring and pinion and make sure it's a 1.5 to 1? or is it pretty much guaranteed to be a 1.5 coming for a 188hp v8

the good news is that the 2.0 ratio drives are MUCH easier to find used.... so you shouldn't have any problem finding one...

upper end is toast

aside from the gear ratio. if yer upper had gears or brgs disintegrate, all the metal fragments will also effect the lower as the lub is common to both upper and lower... metal fragments won't help your lower last too long from what i understand... maybe a sei might be the way to go..
