upper gearbox leak

The seal where the driveshaft enters the gearbox is leaking on my pre-alfa outdrive. I had a "mechanic" replace the seal this past Spring. He said that the shaft was grooved and the seal would leak; he was right. I pulled the outdrive and the bellows was full of gear oil. On the tractor board I frequent, someone had mentioned a commercially available sleeve to go on seal surfaces. Anyone hear of such a thing?

Re: upper gearbox leak

The seal sleeves work well they are sold by size and available at most autoparts stores, we used to use them alot but as the cost went up and the price of the yoke didn't we went to just installing a new yoke, when you figured the extra labor there wasn't much of a savings and if we screwed a sleeve up we had to eat the cost so we stopped installing them

Re: upper gearbox leak

Having one installed on mine right now I have 120 merc. (1970) the shaft was not available any more so I had no choice. Shop said they work great my outdrive blew that seal and another one when I was on lake blew upper gears $750.00 to redo :( so make sure to get yours sealed right. Good luck..
