Ok, i have a alpha one generation one, every year I pull drive, this year the yoke seal was leaking, pulled retainer ring and pulled shaft. I still have the slip fit bearing/gear design, gears don't look too good but no chipped or broken teeth, worst gear is the drive gear, ill get a pic of it, however, the bearings and races on the driven gear don't look to healthy either, im gonna replace the yoke and seal to fix the leak, however I'm thinking I need to do those bearings on the pinion shaft/driven gear, will probably just run the gears for now, I'm sure the lower gears aren't much better, she gets alot of work on erie, 25 ft searay fisherman is what the alpha is moving

Question is what kind of tool do I need to remove the races in the cap and down in the drive, also I read there is probably shims in there also so would those be on the top cap or down in the drive, I'm thinking if I change just the races and bearings I can still run the same shims

Need to get manual 6 to work on the drive
The one in the top cap I would use a 3 jaw slide hammer to remove the race

Pic isn't greatest but only thing I see is maybe one tooth on the driven gear being a bit chewed, can't really tell though

General rule is if you replace one gear you replace both, same with bearings. You might find the cost of oem gear/bearing set outweighs the cost of an aftermarket drive upper complete.

When replacing any gear or bearing/cup it is recommended/required to at least check and possibly change the gear height shimming and driveshaft preload prior to final assembly

As stated, you should have mercury manual #6 for outline of the proper procedure for inspecting/rebuilding of your drive

If you change the bearings and races you will need to set up rolling torque and reshim the gears. Slide hammer on jaw puller will get the races out. A little heat on the housing helps
