Re: upper housing question

You have a water tube that is copper and has a thin wall that bt Doctur is talking about.
There is also a copper colored shift shaft-INTERMEDIATE that has a "foot" at the top of it. Put a dab of grease on the top of the foot and push it into the "shoe", that will help it stay in place when you put the lower back up to the upper.
Good luck muc
hope that helps muc

The copper tube goes from the water pump to the plastic fitting in the upper

I think what you are calling the shift shaft is actually the vertical drive shaft which is only an inch or so in front of the tube. The shift shaft is right in the front of the drive.

You mean this?

Shift%20Shaft.png

If so, that is normal.
Here is a link to the online manual. It will save you from putting things together wrong.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf

Also assuming this is not an Alpha I Gen II drive.

Re: upper housing question

no don this tube is hanging from the bottom of the upper which is still mounted on boat.it looks as if it will get in the way of the lower when i go to mate them.but it may go up into the upper far enough when i put them together

Re: upper housing question

If its the size of 1/2 inch copper pipe ,it goes between the water pump and the inlet pocket cover.

Re: upper housing question

If it's nothing described so far, it's time for you to take a picture of it and post it. It may be something that isn't supposed to be in there.

Re: upper housing question

don i just took a flashlite and looked at it close. it looks as if the tube that the shift shaft goes into came loose from the upper housing.this inside this tube it has teeth that will match up with the shift shaft. the problem is i can move it all around, but it will not come out.

Re: upper housing question

I must say Don ,that posting pics like those are a real help to some of the posters who dont have manuals yet to describe the "hanging parts".
Keep up the good work(pics).
Ed

If its item "A" in Dons pic, its not supposed to come out of the upper.

Re: upper housing question

It still sounds like you are describing the shift shaft in the picture below.
Shift%20Shaft.png
It is held in by a cotter pin aft the shift shaft is put through the hole in the upper housing. When the upper is mated to the lower, you have to make sure it gets on the lower shift shaft properly, or you won't be able to shift the drive.
Since you have the manual, look at page 3A-24 and 3A-33. It shows how to install the shaft.
