Gidday, I have a 1984 50hp Merc with loose upper mounts. I have removed the powerhead from drive shaft housing but am now having trouble freeing the rubber mounts from the bolts. All going well ! should the rubber mounts just slide off the bolts or are they threaded on ? I have also noted on other related topics people suggesting the removal of the lower leg for this opperation, why would I need to do this ?

cheers in advancd.

Re: Upper mount replacement, 50hp Merc

To change your rubber bushing, I assume you have removed the exhaust plate. This would mean that the water tube and shift shaft are no londer in the mid-section.

To reintall the powerhead, you must remove the lower unit first. Both the water tube, and shift shaft require some finesse at the last moment to guide the water tube into the pump housing. For this reason, I believe the lower unit must come off, and be the last to reassemble once you have the powerhead in position.

Be sure to use new base gaskets on that powerhead.

I replaced the rubber bushing/spacers on my mid-section (two bolts that run toward the front of the boat). They slid off the bolts easily. Are those the bushing you refer to?

Cheers for your reply AMD Rules,

thats right, the water tube, exhaust pipe and shift shaft came out when the powerhead was lifted.

The rubber bushing I mean are inside the leg at the top. I have removed the mount cover and most of the rubber bushing, but the inner parts of the bushings which is a metal tube/sleve remains on the bolts and won't budge. Would one normally just replace the rubber bushing ? as the bolts can't be removed from the leg unless the leg itself is removed. joy joy !!!
