upper Shift Shaft movement

I am currently rebuilding a MC-1 outdrive/bellhousing assembly.

On the bellhousing I noticed that there is a slight up and down movement on the upper shift shaft (#22) http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_Pictures3.asp?dnbr=%2075470&ivar=images/CRUISER/75470/E14.png&inbr=1591&bnbr=5&bdesc=BELL+HOUSING+ASSEMBLY.
Is this normal?
or is this something that needs addressed to stop water entering the u-joint bellow area.

Did you replace the bushings with the new-style upper? Did you remember the plastic washer?
A tiny bit of movement is probably normal.
