Hi guys,

I have a question on my alpha 1 gen 2 drive. I changed out the upper shift shaft bushings and seals in the bell housing. I know there was an updated upper bushing/seal unit but it's too late for that now as I already installed the original style stuff. My question is which way should the lips be facing? I installed them towards the exhaust passage due to the pressure and my dealer agreed but I can tell that he really didn't know. Not very impressed with my aftermarket repair manual that didn't even cover this topic. I always like to get the factory manuals but the dealer talked me into this one, said it was a good book.

Thanks'
Rich.

Re: Upper shift shaft.

Assuming you're talking about the seal lip, it does go down. The only purpose of the seal is to keep the water out of the shift cable etc.

Yes I meant to say seal lip. Thanks, just wanted to make sure because the seals I took out had the lips facing up towards the shift cable cavity. I installed em lip down facing exhaust, smooth side up facing **** cable cavity.

Re: Upper shift shaft.

The updated bushing/seal was for Alpha Ones and older. The Gen 2 already had the upgrade if I'm not mistaken. The upper one is also the seal which should face the exhaust end... down. The lower one is just a bushing no seal.

Completely correct on all counts.
