I have a 1983 Mercruiser 305/5L MCM228R Serial# 6275628 with an "R" sterndrive. The bearing in the top of the stern drive (under the top cover) broke apart and needs replacing. All that remains of the bearing is the bearing inner collar still pressed onto the gear shaft and the bearing race embedded in the top cover holding assembly. I noticed the sterndrive parts diagram has some shims located on the top of the bearing. I'm going to have a machine shop dig out the bearing race (I tried getting it out and failed) and am wondering should I expect to find some shims lodged on top of the race. I'm thinking I can count the number of shims and just put that same number back. Does this sound right?

Nope,.... Not really,.... The remains of that bearin' has traveled ALL through the drive, top to bottom,...

Yer wastin' yer Money, 'n time on that drive,....

A Brand New SEI drive is Cheaper than just the Parts you need to finish the rebuild of yer old drive,.... labor Not included,...

The factory manuals show, 'n explain, in detail the goin's on of the drive,....
Look there to answer the questions above,...

Shims are a specific thickness and the they determine the running clearance. Did you recover all the rollers and was there any gear damage?

Wow! Special tools - a 500 page manual - need a whole new sterndrive. I didn't realize there was so much to this. I did go through the unit and noticed just a small nick on one upper vertical gear tooth. The bearing is about $25 so I think I will just try and put it together as best I can and hope for the best. If it blows up I'll just have to paddle back to the dock and start again. Thanks for the all input
