My gimbal assy moves up about 1/8th inch and SELOC advises the clearance should be like 10k at the lower washer. I am having trouble finding the bolt on top (inside the plastic plugs) that is suppose to be tightened using a punch and hammer to close the gap. Kinda hard to get the grease out of the way to see. Downloaded from onlinemicrofiche the gimbal ring assy and steering lever parts breakdown and it shows the nut on top. Just start tightning it with a punch(clockwise) and it will pull the gimbal ring up????

Ayuh,........
That Big Nut is How it's Tightened,...........

It's also Possible that Your Gimbel Assembley is Worn Beyond the Limits,..........
If you've got the 2 Plastic Plugs on the outside of the shield,..... Somebody has Already Been There, Once Before..........

BTW,...... This Job is Much Easier to do from the Inside,..... with the Engine out of the Way.......

Re: Upper swivel shaft 225S

Ok!! I have not pulled the engine but I do have the plactic plugs out. I've cleaned the grease out of the area as best as possible and can not see anything that resembles a nut. I have a visual on the nut and bolt for the steering arm but nothing on the upper swivel shaft. Need some help here! Is the nut (used to pull the gimbal ring up), above or below the steering arm? And what will happen if I allow the play to remain as it is? I can move the OD up about 1/16 to 1/8 inch.

You need to tighten that nut until you get the .002 to .010 spec. You will need to loosen the steering arm first.

Where is the nut? Is it above the steering lever or below it?

Bondo, There is no doubt that this is not your first rodeo. And I don't mean to question you. There is no nut there. And maybe the knucklehead that was in there last should find another past time than to work on boats. Maybe I should too. I took an air gun and blew all the grease out of the way and above the steering lever is about a 1/4 inch space then the housing of the transom mount comes down. I don't even see threads. Maybe I gave the wrong info. I advised 225s but I guess it is a 888. Does that make a difference? I downloaded the same schematic and the nut shown is not on the unit. Can I put a washer on the lower swivel to take up the slack? Please dont tell me that I have to take it all apart to fix the problem.

Toot, how did you make out?...... The nut [#27] does not exist on all models Bolt #32 is what holds up the upper swivel shaft.....There is a notch cut into it for that purpose.....Shim the lower like you said, careful with that cotter pin on the lower shaft. If you have had it out already [cotter pin] good for you. :) ....JK

Re: Upper swivel shaft 225S

Thanks, I thought I was goin nuts (no pun intended) Ya, there is definately no nut. So I should be ok to shim the lower swivel assy with a ss washer? cool. I am assuming the shim should accompany the existing washer which is located on the upper part of the lower swivel shaft assy? Thanks for the reply. I was going to just leave it and wait till it blows up. Finding the washer in a hardware store might be fun. Might have to break down and order one.

Re: Upper swivel shaft 225S

Maybe I should ask this. Shim to the same clearances? about 10k's?

Re: Upper swivel shaft 225S

I would say it doesn't have to be super tight....Can you actually measure 10K? I would say .010 should be plenty.....Those bolts behind the plastic plugs are 5/8", BTW.....Go easy on that cotter pin, too...The easiest way might be to order those washers from merc, and just stack 'em.....JK

Toot, You need to shim before you tighten the bolts inside the plastic plugs....Just wanna make sure I was clear....JK

Re: Upper swivel shaft 225S

Or loosen them a bit..... Before you shim... If you still have slop, the upper swivel shaft has an Allen key plug in the middle..Again, leave the steering arm bolts loose.....(looking up from the bottom of the the transom) tightening it may help, But if it is rounded out (the Allen key), shimming the lower & tightening the bolts under the plastic plugs is all you can do.....It should improve the slop....I cannot stress enough how careful you need to be when removing the cotter pin from the lower swivel pin ....If you break the casting on the transom shield you will be S crewed .....Get the proper punch & be patient... Smart spot for that cotter pin  ..JK

Re: Upper swivel shaft 225S

Got a question. What is the plug for at the top of the transom plate. It's actually a slotted brass plug. Mine is broke. will I ever have to take it out for anything?

Re: Upper swivel shaft 225S

The one at the very top of the transom shield? Above the zerk fitting in the indent? Approximately 1/4" x 1/4"? I dont know, for sure.....If you remove it, & pump in enough grease through the zerk it will tell you when the cavity is full....The only thing down there is the top of the upper swivel pin....I don't see any other purpose.....JK

Oops! If it is missing you need to fix it, but I don't see any need to remove it.....JK
