upper unit seal replacement ????????

Does anyone know if you can replace the seal that is in the upper drive unit on a model 1 mercruiser? It is the seal that is in the bottom, where the lower unit driveshaft splines are.

I really dont wanna have to take the upper unit apart if i dont have to.

It can be changed without dis-assembly of the upper but if it`s leaking oil it`s the upper seal that needs changing

ok, it looks like it can come out from the bottom side. I just wasnt sure. Am I correct, it looks like I can pull it out with a pick or something like that?

When I look into the upper drive where the water tube goes into the housing with 4 bolts, the seal looks like brass, and the rubber seal looks like its missing, i felt it with my finger and no rubber is present.

The oil leaks out around the prop hub and upon disassembly i found the lower unit driveshaft and the impeller housing are wet with oil. Would that be the upper unit seal where the lower unit driveshaft splines into the upper unit?

Ok, I got the seal out and the rubber was gone, and the spring that puts tension on the rubber was in pieces, do u think the other gearcase seal is bad to or do u think i can get lucky and it be only the one i removed. this thing didnt start leaking until I split the drives to replace the impeller.

If it leaks oil the upper seal needs replacement, the lower seal is not a oil seal per se.Helps keep water out not oil in.

Can the upper seal be changed without taking it apart? might as well ask right?

No ,you need to remove the vert gear and drive the old seal upwards to remove it, and drive the new one in from the top down.
