I have a 69 merc 1000 that I ordered pump kit (46-96148A8) for. my question is that my old housing had a seal between insert and housing that went around the driveshaft + the seal on top of the housing. my new one has no inner seal and i don't know if it should or not.

Does the new kit have a thick rubber washer(kinda like a hose washer only bigger)?
If so it should fit over the drive shaft and slide down to the top of the pump.
Post a pic of the parts kit.J

I would return the kit to where you bought it at. There should be a seal in the housing as your old one has. The other rubber ring seal is a slinger for any water that gets by the inner seal. The kit you have is incomplete and I would not use it.

The new housing is correct and does not have/use a seal in it, the only housings that had the upper seal are the old aluminum housings and a few select plastic housing that are flat on the top where slinger fits. The later housings with the raised area( where red arrow is) do not need a seal as they use the small labyrinth seal on top/bottom of impeller to seal against wear plate and top of cup in housing. Use what you purchased as it will work and picture you posted looks like a plastic housing that has melted from a dry run as the cup is recessed. The "slinger does two things: (1) help keep trash and exhaust from getting on top of impeller and (2) the most important is to keep water from climbing driveshaft and getting into crankshaft splines. That why some driveshafts have a o-ring groove to stop it from entering splines or a crankshaft seal in a housing pressed into spline end of crank.

THX Fastbullet, I've never run into one that didn't have a seal and was made out of nylon plastic. Is this a newer aftermarket setup?

Re: Upper water pump housing help

All the engines after 1975 have the plastic housings and the OEM does not use a seal.
