Jeez fellahs, I don't post much.....But wondered what you think....<br /><br />"My shift cable must have stretched" (solid core s.s wire DOES NOT stretch)<br /><br />"100:1 oil mix Is just fine" (It's fine as long as you run your engine everyday; at 100:1, there Is not enough residual oil to keep things from RUSTING)<br /><br />"If I keep running It, the problem with "fix" Itself" (Engines and drives are mechanical, non-living things that have NO cognitive thought process' that will allow them to fix themselves)

Re: "Urban Legend"

Hi, Wakebite.<br /><br />Solid SS wire will stretch, given enough force.<br /><br />100:1, except with Amsoil, is not okay. Mix as currently recommended by the manufacturer. Several makes experimented with 100:1 in the 80s. All have recinded that recommendation in favor of 50:1.<br /><br />Some problems are transient, but the causes of them are not. Find and fix the cause or look for a new engine.

Re: "Urban Legend"

Laws of physics say anything will stretch with enough applied force....I'm talk'in Throttle/shift cables......

wakebite,<br /><br />"Stretching" of the cables is probably a bit of a "stretch"-pun intended. ;) <br /><br />However, wear is somnething that happens, particularly on the plastic ends.

Re: "Urban Legend"

JB<br /><br />My '92 8hp Yam does have 100\1 stamped on it, and that is the mix I have used so far. The motor is used as a kicker for resonably slow trolling, and is usually run ( I'm guessing), between idle and about 1800rpm. I have owned this motor for two seasons, the original owner always ran 50\1. I like the low odor/ no smoke while trolling for 6 or 7 hrs at a time. <br />I carry extra oil on board, and figured if I ever needed the motor to get me in, I could always richen the oil\fuel mix to run it at higher rpm. This is of course presuming I remembered to do this  <br />So what do ya think? Should I carry on this way, or should I run a 50\1 mix? The motor runs sweet, always starts first or second pull.<br /><br />Thanks for any advice. Canuck 16.

Re: "Urban Legend"

Merc. Did extensive testing on 50:1 VS 100:1. Although they found no lubrication problems, They did find corrosion problems. It seems there was not enough oil In suspension to coat the Internal components with enough oil to keep them from rusting (crank, bores, rods and bearings) when the engines were at rest for long periods of time. OMC came up with the same conclusion. If you nnly use the engine periodically (a few times a month), I'd mix the fuel at 50:1 . If it Is used frequently, once a week or more, I suppose 100:1 would be O.K....

Re: "Urban Legend"

Makes sence Wakebite, but is'nt my oil injected 200hp V6 burning about a 100\1 mix at idle right before I shut it down? It always has a fair bit of residual oil, judging by the initial smoke on startup.<br />Thx for the reply.

Re: "Urban Legend"

With a 100:1 premix, You get 100:1 at all times, With variable rate Injection, You get 100:1 at Idle, 50:1 at wot and a % anywhere In between, So the average Is 75:1. Theoretically you are getting more oil on the Internal components to combat corrosion....Unless of course you only Idle around all day. So using that logic, hypothetically, you could premix @ 75:1 and be O.K......hypothetically speaking, of course.....Things that make you go "HHHHmmmmm"....

Canuck....Depends on the year and make of that 200HP V6, I know OMC doesn't use a VRO anymore, they now use and OMS(Oil Metering System) that generally runs at 50:1 all the time, maybe 75:1 at extended idle.

Re: "Urban Legend"

Wakebite, The 75:1 premix sounds like a good compromise :) .<br /><br />The main power is a '89 Yamaha (precision blend).<br />Canuck 16.
