Urgent! Can I run my prop on a trailer to load engine?

Sounds dumb, but the lake is not good to go for a ride today. Can I back the trailer in the ramp, lower the outdrive and power it up to 3/4 throttle to check for overheat?

The ramp won't like it . . . ;) 3/4 throttle sounds excessively dangerous to me, could jump the bow stop, she better be waaaay strapped down.

If you're going to the trouble of going to the ramp, take her out, or wait for a better day. Sounds irresponsible and dangerous what you propose.

Unless you mean in neutral? If so, sorry for my confusion.

While it may not overheat during the test, you will be stirring up all sorts of mud and sand and suck it through the impeller and cooling system. If it didn't overheat before, it may trash the impeller and overheat the next day. And in some locales, a DNR agent may give you a stern lecture on power loading if it happens to be against the rules on that particular lake.

Why do you suspect an overheating issue in the first place?

I am battling not knowing if it truly is overheating. I installed an automotive temp guage into the port and wanted to try it out.

This ramp is right on the lake with a minimal break wall so the silt is not a problem there.

I did run in neutral up to 2300 rpm and of course it will never overheat. Only when you start to cruise it will run right near the red on the factory guiage. I think it is wrong though as the riser did not feel warm at all.

Do Not Power Load Your Boat

That does the same thing to the ramp.
i had the unfun of falling off a ramp that was all washed out like that... man, it's a bummer... i got stuck at the shakels for the leafsprings... man, ya ain't going anywhere till ya get loose.. somehow...
but the lake is not good to go for a ride today.
why, was it frozen... ;).... around here it coulda been... :(

No. If you need to load the engine and do not feel comfortable enough to actually go out, see if you can go to a service shop and install a test prop.

last ramp i was at had a huge drop off then an island 15-20 feet back from the hole at the end of the ramp. i would take it out on the lake unless it was really windy.

Well, its a good thing I asked or I would have done it!!!

2-4 foot swells are a little above my experiance level especially in an unknown boat that *could* overheat. I guess I will just wait.

that's one way to learn how to deal with them, go out and get off on them..
especially in an unknown boat that *could* overheat.
but not with your scenario. broke down in them conditions could be most hazardous to your health. preferably only go out in them conditions when your boat is operating at full capacity, as your boat may be tested hard when the going gets rough. ya really want it operating top notch when your out in that.
I guess I will just wait.
good idea... ;)

At a solid concrete ramp you can run a motor on a trailer to get a load to set your idle, but not a good idea for any higher speed testing.
Think about your wind direction and see if there's another ramp in the lee you could use for a launch and short trip.

Yeah ^^^^^^ here's an example of a ramp at some of our western reservoirs. Could go on another half mile below this at Mead . . . ;) No way you could hurt that, so the "never power load" thing is, IMHO, ramp specific.

Just noticed the sunk boat on the left  Nice safety reminder ;)
