Re: US Engine. . Company info needed

Howdy,

A couple of "Summers" ago, I installed a "USENGINES" 3.0L reman engine in a friends boat.

Other than being a little light on the paint in some places, I was happy with the engine. So Far, my friend is happy with the "new" engine. His "core" engine was a freeze damaged/cracked block and US Engines still gave him half "core" return value.

If I needed a replacement engine, I would buy from them for my boat. I would save the shipping though since I only live about 25 min away.

If you're on the other side of the country, you might be better off to find someone local so you can save on shipping and look them in the eye if there's a problem!

I live in VA so I would be shipping my old engine to them and then they are going to dress the new rebuilt with all the parts from my old engine and ship it back to me so it is ready to drop in. The shipping is only 250 each way so 500 total. The nice thing about them is they give you a 7 year 500 hour warranty!!!

Surely you can find a local reputable machine shop who could do the same thing for less money? $500 shipping seems pretty steep to me.

What size engine are you shipping to them?

You might be better off going to a local rebuilder. Even with a lesser warranty, you could go directly to the people who did yours......

Now in USENGINES defense, They do allow their warranty to be covered by you taking the engine to a local repair/machine shop and they allow something like $45/hr for repair of a workmanship or part failure problem......They do want to speak directly to the shop and I presume they would send parts etc for the repair.

I called them asking about replacing my stock (330hp) 454 with a (425hp) 454 and I think that when I'm ready to do it I'll use their engine since they're so close by.

If you want to see the warranty, you will have to ask them to send it to you. They do not seem to post it on their site.

Local Napa machine shoppe if possible or other reputable machine shop, support local folks. Plenty of folks rebuilding motors with good results no need to ship across the country. $5,000 buys alot of 502 rebuild.

I hope you're getting a little more on the core charge!

The "core" for a 454 is $1k.

I didn't ask about the 502 since the 502 rebuild price was almost DOUBLE the price for the 425hp 454 ($2995) and you have to supply the core.

I would expect them to offer MORE money for the core!

If you do it, please post your performance results here! You're going to get the engine I want to put in front of my Bravo III in my Four Winns 211 Liberator!

They are giving me 1000 for the core.

This is the quote they gave me:

$4195 for the 425hp 454 - 1000 for my 502 core
$600 to dress the motor (my 502 is fuel injected so they are going to convert the fuel system to carbureted)
$750 for carburetor and intake
$500 shipping

Total: $5045

Ok, The engine you're getting is:

7.4 Magnum 425 h.p with 2 1/2" intake ports ...... $3,195 + $1000 core charge.

I would have thought they would give you a little more for the 502 core.

How much will they give you for the Mercruiser fuel injection system (you're keeping it right? You can easily sell it on ebay for $1000 or more!!) .....

There's no conversion required. You pull the MPI system and manifold, and replace it with the carb+intake manifold.

I was quoted basically the same price. ($2995.00 for the 2" intake model Although I would probably opt for the 2.5" like you)

But there was no "dressing" ......... I would take them my 454 core, long block and bring back the same.

If you're giving them your Mercruiser MPI system, you're giving away an extra $1000 if you don't keep it.....

There's not much to "dress" ...... you simply pull everything off your old engine and keep it. Bolt it all on when the"new" engine comes in the mail!!

I would keep the $600 and dress myself ;)
