Got a little heck at the local boat ramp yesterday cause we had our USCG Aux safety inspection sticker on starboard side of our windshield - gentleman said it's supposed to be on port, that's where "officials" will look for it. In talking to him further it seems like this may be a water to water thing depending on where they sit at the ramp? I can't anything official - anyone know for sure?

anyone giving you grief about where it goes is pretty much an anal retentive goofball. as you do not even need one to operate a boat. it seems each flotilla has a different spot it wants the check but i think it hardly matters.

Vessel Safety Checks

The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free vessel safety checks (VSC) to boaters who wish to promote their own boating safety. If you are interested in a Vessel Safety Check come to one of the scheduled checks or contact your marina for more information. We can schedule an individual date and time for an inspection. Call John or Kathleen Sharer at 423-238-7476 or e-mail and we will respond as soon as possible.

The Vessel Examiners who perform these checks are specially trained Auxiliarists who are kept informed on the latest legal requirements for boaters.

Vessel Examiners have no legal authority - their goal is to prevent boaters from getting equipment-related citations and to prevent safety-related accidents.

These safety checks are meant to be an educational experience. The Vessel Examiners will check for all required items on board your boat and if everything is present and in good working order, they will award a decal to affix to your boat. If you wish, they will also gladly explain the reason for the various safety equipment requirements and explain how safety equipment works.

Ha ha. That's what I wanted to say...

At our home lake where they sit they see only the port side of the boat. I think he got annoyed that he wasted a walk only to have us point to our sticker on starboard side. I asked for another sticker to fix it but apparently budgets are tight everywhere - he only had 100 for the season and was rationing them :D

Anyway, I know there's no requirement but I let them do the check it early every season then I display the sticker. It is a good education and they don't take a lot of time - I'd rather take a few mins at the ramp than pay $70 caue i don't have a throwable or something. Plus, it could prevent an official check here and there.
