I'm thinking about buying a Suzuki 40hp outboard, the current owner doesn't know the year but it looks to be from the 70's or 80's. My boat desn't have a console and the motor doesn't come with controls, but the guy says that Suzuki works well with Evinrude parts and that I can easily find some. Is this true? Also how difficult would it be to install controls on a jon boat with no place for them? (I don't need to build a console I just want to put steering and throttle in the boat somewhere.)

As long as the attaching ends of the cables will mount to your engine, it should work. You might look in the "Top Secret File" sticky at the top of the page, there is a list of salvage yards there, maybe one of them would have the proper controls for your engine.
I have seen where someone rivited a piece of sheet metal to the boat and mounted controls on it. You might have to get creative and think out side of the box to make something for your boat.

Stick Steering on one side and shift/throttle on the other side. The steering probably is available here at iboats. I don't know anything about Suzuki. But Evinrude stuff isn't going to be a drop-in replacement.

EDIT: Sorry, I couldn't find it here at iboats, but here is what I was referring to---

The older suzuki's are very OMC like, The older style dual handle evinrude/jonny controls can be adapted to work, as well as morse type controls, you might have to fabricate some connectors & such. control station, plywood, galvanized drywall screws,,paint...good luck
