Some have suggested that continous use of Stabil or other gas stabilizer would be beneficial for carbed engines - particularly those with the common usage pattern of weekend-on week-off. I am told that the carbs in some of the newer 4-strokes have very small passages and gum up very easily.

What (other than cost) is the disadvantage of running a stabilizer all the time? Or isn't there one?

I know of no risk involved in using stabilized gas all the time, swist.

On my boats with built-in tanks I did it all the time.

With carbed engines I couldn't forsee a disadvantage. It will keep water out the fuel and maintain it at the best quality possible from weekend to weekend (The guys who get to go 4-5 times a week are damm lucky, OH to be retired).

Instead of Stabil every fill-up, a can Seafoam every now and then will increase the performance of the old carbed engine and probably will dramatically increase the time inbetween carb rebuilds or cleanings.

It will drain your wallet prematurely!

There is absolutly no advantage to it at all.

This year is the first year I even used it in the winter, (Amsoil Stabilizer), but I have a 2 stroke.

I have always used it in my boats for winter storage and I ran it half of one summer and the other half just my gas oil mix, I am a weekend only boater, I seen no diff. in performance........

Swist I went through a major hassle with a new motor this year.

California finally got around to phasing out the MTBE and started usnig the 10% ethanol fuel about a month after I bought my boat this year.

It crapped up my carbs and caused the rebuilding of the carbs, the dealership had 25-30 other customers as well.

The fix was clean and rebuild and rejet the carbs also adding a Raycor ten micton water fuel seperator into the fuel system.

The head mechanic told me to run Stabul year round in the boat and to store it this winter with the tank full and to run it every two weeks or so for at least 30 minutes.

One of the reasons he told me to run the stabul is our relative humidity here is right at 90% but the weather is cool so we get a ton of condensation.

There are going to be a lot of suprised folks that didn't stabul thier fuel next spring.

Here are two links that will give you more info

www.thelog.com/news/newsview.asp?c=171312

http://www.maxrules.com/fixgas.html

I use it on everything, except cars. The cars get plenty of excersize.

I DO NOT have carb. fouling problems on anything except one-a Honda 8. No matter what I do, that engines jets are so small they clog reqularly.
