The tag on my stern reads as follows:

Model # 986698
Eng. 4.3L
Serial # T0739078

According to the previous owner, this is not the same one that came on the boat. Based on the model # how do I determine what make it is?

Well, that number is an OMC number. So the "make" is OMC.

If you want to view part numbers, you need to find the engine number that looks like the following,

4.30

262AMLMED 1989

262APRMED 1989

432AMLMED 1989

432APRMED 1989

Although the above is for 1989 model year, go to epc.brp.com/ to find other years.

You'll have to assume that until you know otherwise.........in any case, the correct drive for a V-6 will be the same ratio regardless of year. So the year model is not all that important.
