Re: used boat.

Your "shifter" is going to be a function of the motor, not the boat. You will need to buy a set of Mercury controls and they have to match your motor's year. You first have to determine if your motor will take controls (a 20 should). Used? will be hard, but not impossible, to find.

By "conceal" do you mean "console" or do you want to hide your cables, etc.?

Cable steering comes in kits. You can also duplicate it by buying the parts but you probably come out ahead buying them as a kit rather than trying to cobble it together yourself. Cable is a vintage system and not as safe as tube steering, but like controls, you have to determine if your motor will accept tube steering, then determine if your boat will.

I replaced an OMC on a 1964 whaler with an old 20 hp merc--maybe your same one; does it say "200" on it? Old whalers don't accept tube steering very well so I stuck with cable, and replaced the cable itself, saved the parts. Had a dickens of a time finding a way to hook the cable on and was about to have a piece manufactured, when I found the part and ordered it--a bent piece of metal that you bolt onto the motor and connects with the cable with rings.

Good luck!
