I will be looking to buy a trolling motor (used) soon. Probably 6-10 Hp. Are there any
mid 1970's to late 1980's that have a good reputation (if maint. well)?
Any to stay away from ?

Any info. would be great.........

Hi Rod Holder
My opinion is, that all the major brands were and are good. I have seen very few motors that died from old age (worn out). Most are abused to death. For some reason the smaller ones get kicked the hardest. You will have to judge each motor as it comes.
good luck.

Thanks alcan,
Do you think that an engines ability to start
easily when cold is a good indicator on the
overall condition ? (as a start, then check
for slop and damage).

Been busy, sorry for late reply..........

Rod Holder

If a motor is willing to start and run from cold, usually ignition and compression will be ok. Minor carbureator and fuel problem is normally fixable at lower cost. You are right - good sign. Be sure it runs on both, if a twin.

Rod Holder

I´d advise you to read some of the threads on this board about buying/examining gear and engines on used motors - lots of good advise !!!

Hello Rod Holder
As Dane said, edication is the key. I would swing by the library and look at some general repair and maintinance manuals. This will help you determine what you want.
