I am thinking about buying a used lower unit for my 1970 johnson 60hsp elect shift motor.
Is there anything I need to check or have checked before spending the $$$ on a used lower unit? They say it has been presure checked.
Thanks,
Rick

Re: used lower unit

Hi Rick
I would check the following:-

1: Test the gear change solenoids, meter each wire to earth you should get aprox 8 ohms on each wire. A very high resistance or open circuit shows the solenoid is U.S

2: Turn the drive shaft clockwise, the unit should be in forward gear, listen for any odd noises.

3: If all seems well and you purchase the unit change the oil and impeller just to be safe.

Best of luck

Richard

Ok RPJS,
Im a first time boat owner. Slow down and speak land lover  lol
#1 where is the gear change solenoids and what do you mean by US?
#2 I have not been able to find on locally so I was thinking about ordering from one of two places that say they have it is stock, Nicks marine or Outboard exchange. Have you know anything about these?
#3 I am going to do this
If a person orders a remanufactured unit should it come with the seals in place and with the impeller?
Thanks,
Rick

Re: used lower unit

Sorry Rick I'll try again.

1: The gear change solenoids are mounted just in front of where the drive shaft enters the water pump, there will be 2 wires from the solenoid housing these are the ones you must check, using a standard electrical meter conect on lead of the meter to 1 wire at a time and the other lead to the casing of the lower unit, you should get a reading of 8 ohms if the reading is much higher than 8 ohms or open circuit the solenoids are U.S (Up the Swanee).

2: I have never had dealings with either of the 2 names you mention, however if as you say you are getting a remanufactured unit you would expect it to have some sort of guarantee and the supplier will be able to tell you what work has been done to the unit, at a minimum I would expect the oil seals to have been replaced, get the dealer to put in writting the work he has done just in case(if they are a representable outfit they will have no problems doing this).

Happy Boating

Richard

Hey RiL
I'm up on the caprock, too. If it were mine, I'd consider looking for a whole used outboard at one of these two sites:

http://listings.ebaymotors.com/aw/plistings/list/category26443/index.html

in layman's terms that's ebay.com, then ebay motors, then Parts and Accessorie, then Boat & Motors

http://www.aomci.org/webads.htm

That way you get a whole motor for replacement parts. With a little patience, you can get a whole motor for about what you'd spend on a rebuilt lower alone.
